Oops, did I type that out loud?! Is there anything wrong with studio portraits? Absolutely not! I take studio style portraits “all the time,” especially for my newborn clients. When it comes down to it though, I much prefer getting out of doors.
Take the photos in this post. Is the location super special…probably not? Unless you know that the children are sitting on the lawn of their future home. Their parents have worked hard to buy that land. Nearly every weekend of the spring, summer, and fall the whole family is there working to maintain and improve the property. What happens when the work doesn’t allow for small hands to help? Well, on hot days, the sprinkler often comes out. On cool autumn days and wet spring days, there’s always Tonka trucks and shovels for excavating in the gravel pile.
That simple enough looking yard is the place where these kids are spending much of their childhood learning what it is work hard, as well as play hard. Years down the road when they look at the photos, they’ll know they were sitting in their yard, under their tree, where they’ve shared many a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, as well as many sibling arguments. As for their parents, every time they look at the photos, they’ll see their precious children sitting on the ground they worked so hard to provide them.
So, maybe it is a super special location after all.
