The day was kicked off when West Virginia native, Carl Hatfield fired the opening shot at the starting line. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to meet Carl, you know his passion for running and community. Highlights of the contribution he has made to the running community include being the founder of the West Virginia Track Club and the Greater Clarksburg 10K, but that is nothing compared to his running resume. He is a two time all American champion and has participated in the Olympic trials six times. Needless to say he knows his way around a race and is ready to share all his experience gained knowledge to any ear that will listen. You might say he is the real McCoy.
Shortly after the last 5K participant crossed the finish line, a new addition to the day, the children’s Mission Mile race set off. Astoundingly, there were multiple youngsters running this one mile race after first running in the 5K race. Now that is what I call stamina and endurance!
A big favorite with the smallest racers, the Kids K (an untimed race), ended the racing portion of the day.
Awards were given out for top overall male and female, top three male/female categorized by age, and top three in the parent-stroller category.
Warm and sunny with a stiff breeze, it was a great day for a race. Congratulations to all who participated in the event. I hope you enjoy the photographic highlights.
